Van Herpen used real Northside residents to model her show. The Northside is an integrated neighborhood consisting of professionals Caucasians and low-income African American residents. The project was able to engage its diverse community by having van Herpen train them in walking and posing for a runway.
It was featured at the Fashion Arts Toronto Festival and received international and local press attention. This is a wonderful example of how a fashion designer could use a site-specific collection in order to influence a place's history, culture, and social dynamics.
A unique fashion collection for a specific location in a city as Cincinnati can have a powerful impact on people and communities. I had the opportunity to use my creative talents and my knowledge of the city to address a very personal issue: racial inequality.

With these in mind, I created a site specific fashion collection that was influenced by Cincinnati's history and culture. The collection was called "Grey Cincinnati" and focused on bringing together diverse populations in an area for cultural dialogue.
Inspiration for my designs was derived from historical census maps, landmark architecture, and racial discrimination. They were created in a series a grey colors that refer to the major ethnic groups of the city. The collection was completed with local fabrics sourced from the oldest locally-owned fabric store in the area.
